Welcome to ECE 600

Departmental Seminar Series in Electrical and Computer Engineering

Purpose: To expose students in their first two semesters of graduate school to various areas within ECE and to areas outside of ECE to which ECE has or could have connections, e.g., biotechnology, physics, mathematics, business, software. As we are sure you know, Electrical and Computer Engineering is very interdisciplinary in nature. Thus, it is important that you be aware of the state-of-the-art in research areas other than your own. The goal of this seminar series is to introduce you to many exciting research areas in Electrical and Computer Engineering and beyond. We may also offer you some “skills” seminars designed to help you with your graduate school studies.

Structure: All ECE graduate students must enroll in ECE 600 during their first two semesters in residence. If ECE 600 is not taken during the first two semesters, it should be taken as early as possible in your academic career here. TAs who have teaching conflicts with the ECE 600 meeting time should contact the ECE 600 Coordinator about how to handle this. Students must attend all scheduled ECE 600 seminars to receive a passing grade. It is expected that the number of scheduled seminars will be approximately eight (8). If a student misses a scheduled ECE 600 seminar for a legitimate reason, the ECE 600 Coordinator will select a makeup seminar for the student. The makeup seminars cannot be ECE Department group meetings or “area seminars,” but should be of the type that will broaden the student's education in fields that border ECE. No more than two seminars may be missed even if they are made up.

Website: The class website is http://www.cae.wisc.edu/~gubner/ece600/08finfo.shtml. Each ECE 600 seminar will be announced both on the class website as well as via email to everyone enrolled in it. Even if you do not receive an email for an upcoming seminar, you are ultimately responsible for keeping track of the schedule. For those weeks in which no ECE 600 seminar is scheduled, you are encouraged to attend a seminar in the various areas in ECE or any seminar in the physical and biological sciences or engineering, or other departments if pertinent to your research.

Technical Seminars: In addition to the scheduled ECE 600 seminars, each semester students must attend three (3) technical seminars sponsored by other departments or ECE research groups. For ideas of other seminars and their schedules, go to the class website, and click on the appropriate link. When students attend a non-ECE-600 seminar, they must provide evidence of attending by submitting an ECE 600 TECHNICAL SEMINAR ATTENDANCE FORM, which may be obtained from the appropriate link on the class website.

Attendance and Credit: At each ECE 600 seminar an attendance sheet will be passed around. The attendance sheet will list the names of all students registered for ECE 600. Please sign your name next to your printed name. You will NOT get credit unless you sign your name on the attendance sheet. If you cannot attend an ECE 600 seminar you are required to submit a MISSED SEMINAR FORM (obtained from the appropriate link on the class website) for approval of the makeup seminar in advance of attending the makeup seminar. The ECE 600 Coordinator reserves the right to require a different makeup seminar. No more than two seminars can be made up. You must obtain the signature of the seminar speaker and return the form to the ECE Department office, 2420 Engineering Hall.

Etiquette: While attending an ECE 600 seminar, please bear in mind that the speaker is making considerable effort in delivering an informative and engaging presentation. You should view it as a great opportunity to gather information about different areas by engaging the speaker with questions. Please exercise some basic courtesy: no newspapers, sleeping, arriving late and/or leaving early. If you arrive too late or leave too early, you will not be given credit for the seminar.

♦♦♦ DO NOT WAIT TILL THE END OF THE SEMESTER TO TURN IN YOUR FORMS!!! TURN THEM IN AS SOON AS POSSIBLE AFTER COMPLETION. ALL FORMS MUST BE TURNED IN BY THE LAST DAY OF CLASS. ♦♦♦
