Systems Seminar
Picture Perfect?
Imaging in the New Millennium
Prof. Damon Tull
UW ECE Dept.
Abstract
We are generating visual communications data such as digital images
and video at an enormous rate. Due to the recent digital camera and
scanner (r-)evolution, and the widespread adoption of MPEG and JPEG
compression standards, consumers and professionals will have
unprecedented access to image (sequence) data in digital format.
These users will demand new methods for the manipulation (acquisition,
representation and transmission) of visual communications data.
In this talk, the trends and challenges of present (consumer) imaging
technologies are presented. In even the latest technology, market
feedback is motivating companies and researchers to revisit the
problem of obtaining an estimate of the original un-degraded image
from a distorted observation. The technical side of this presentation
will discuss the image recovery problem from a set-theoretic point
of view. The new, "modern problems" posed by digital cameras will
be summarized.
Time and Place: Wed., Mar. 1, 3:30-4:30 pm in 4610 Engr. Hall.
